Artist's Studio . Chiswick
Restoration and extension of a purpose built interwar artist's studio. Removal of later internal partitions under the mezzanine to open the kitchen into the double height studio together with the construction of a bedroom annex to relocate sleeping accommodation away from the mezzanine. All to re-establish the studio's expansive internal spaces and external connections.
A floating entrance screen, hiding external service pipes, defines the buildings new entrance and marks the transition between old and new. A cedar rainscreen and sedum roof integrate the extension into its wooded surroundings whilst insulating and weathering the building. Internally, shadow gaps rather than skirting's, a full height 2.5m wide sliding screen, flush door linings, touch latches rather than handles and recessed ceiling lights together with simple wall finishes and large module porcelain floor tiles are used to evoke the open plan utilitarian appearance of the original building.
